Yahoo! A Snow day!

I taught art in the Syracuse City School District for twenty-three years before retiring to concentrate on my own art. While teaching, a snow-day was always an unexpected gift for the teachers as well as the students. I am not a poet or writer. I think this poem worked because it came from personal experience.

I’ve lived in Syracuse for my entire career; first as an art teacher, and since as a fantasy and steampunk painter. I’m currently working on a book that combines my paintings with haikus, as well as participating in various art fairs and exhibits in order to sell my work.

I grew up in Central New York and currently live in Central Massachusetts where I teach elementary school art. I chose to illustrate Izzy Dugger’s poem, because (even though I have always loved school) it reflected the excitement I felt as a child and now as a teacher when a snow day is declared.

Since the Poster Project theme this year is “quarters,” I painted a few extra details like the cuckoo clock set at 6:15, ¼ cup of orange juice on the shelf, and quarters ready to be saved in the collector’s book. I included Major, my Basset Hound, wishfully looking out at the snowy scene, listening to the radio set to WSRS for the list of school cancellations, and hoping for an unplanned day of fun.
