Deviant Dance Tribe

The power of haiku comes from its simple format. The playing card prompt appealed to me. Cards are shuffled, and shuffles are also a part of music and dance. Deviant Dance Tribe uses music and dance to provide an opportunity for a diverse community to express themselves through the arts. The four card suits represent that diversity. In a political climate that tries to suppress diverse viewpoints, I wanted my poem to celebrate the work of the Deviant Dance Tribe’s instructors and performers!

¡Celebremos la diversidad!
Let us celebrate diversity!

The poem I chose inspired me immediately with the playing card suits. One of my favorite movies from my childhood is Disney’s version of “Alice in Wonderland,” which is known for its playing card/chess/royalty, Victorian whimsy, psychedelic surrealism, fantastical locations and creatures, and many other unique motifs.

I chose to portray three types of dance with a diverse group of dancers: Belly Dancing, Salsa, and Ballet, all with similar themes to the poem. I wanted to illustrate a beautiful stage that also carries the card themes of the poem. I had the Syracuse stage in mind for the background since they always do a beautiful job of transforming their stage to enhance the visual experience for the audience.
