Fleeting Radiance

poster information

Description

Fleeting radiance—

year's third quarter—

Red, orange, gold stipple green

amidst infinite blue

The poem was written in September 2025 at the start of the change to fall colors. I saw green leaves beginning to change into the bright colors of autumn. The day was sunny with blue sky stretching to infinity behind the leaves of the forest.

I have lived in Central New York most of my life, between two old growth oak groves in North Syracuse. Trees and our four seasons have always been inspirational. I am a novelist and poet, concentrating on our place in a vast and wondrous universe.

I selected this poem for its ability to distill the essence of fall into colors. The poem's imagery evokes a very familiar seasonal palette and grounds it in an experience many people in the Northeast Coast recognize. Now living in a place where seasonal change is very subtle, I find myself nostalgic for the visible transition of autumn leaves! My goal was to illustrate an accurate reflection of Syracuse in the fall using a calm, contemplative composition to celebrate the quiet beauty of a fleeting moment.
