Description

Around, up and down
Thrills and chills on the midway.
Life's fun at the Fair.

Having ridden many roller coasters, I've felt the thrill of going up the initial incline and the chill when the coaster drops. These rides are part the Fair's fun.

I've designed machines and appreciate how they operate. My mechanical engineering background made me aware that when you look at a roller coaster, a machine, you can see the workings of it, its construction, the steel work, the supports. The rider becomes part of its operation.

This was my first attempt as a poet/writer, so these thoughts and a touch of beginner's luck are what make up my artistic process.

I am an illustrator who was born in Japan, lives in Oregon, and studies in New York. I enjoy working intuitively, with very little conscious thought. I will do several thumbnails based on what pops into my head, select the best sketch, and work in whatever style (and medium) I feel suits a particular piece or subject.

I selected this haiku because I was intrigued by the concept of fun, colorful fair imagery. The poster is not meant to “focus” within an environment so much as to “accent” whatever surrounds it.

As a young artist, I have not yet “grown into” a specific style. With this poster, I was inspired by textile designers who use a multitude of images to create a complex and pattern-like image.
