Description

Psychedelic soul
slicked with mental decibels
this cool groove is jazz

I wrote this haiku several summertimes ago when the Jazz Festival was still downtown.

It reminded me of the colorfulness of Jimi Hendrix, the slickness of Miles Davis, and the straight up coolness blend of both of their musical personalities.

It also instilled in me the importance of writing poetry, perhaps starting with three lines or even three words, and how meaningful the arts are for our communities

Looking through the poems, I knew that Syracuse has a big blues and jazz scene downtown. For me it was about creating art that echoed music. With this piece this was a reflection and reaction upon the jazz I listen to. I sat down, and put on my favorite Dinah Washington record, and let the drawing flow.

I let this piece come together just as many jazz compositions do, through improv. It was planned, but not too planned. As I went along, I figured it out.
