Description

A curious moon
peeping over the rooftop
in Armory Square

I wrote this haiku a few years ago, gazing out a window in a building overlooking Armory Square.

It brought back memories of city life in Seoul, where I lived amid a thriving metropolitan culture of businesses, museums, theaters, movie houses and galleries, in addition to thousands of bars.

The bright night life of Seoul stole any chances to catch a full moon. Ain't we so lucky to savor a full moon over the beautiful old buildings in Armory Square?

When I first read the haiku, I was drawn to its whimsical nature, which inspired my stylistic approach to the piece. I wanted everything to have a fun and lively feel to complement the fanciful notion of a "curious" moon.

Another theme I had wanted to illustrate was Armory Square's past and present state. What exactly was the moon "peeping over" to see? It has certainly been here longer than we have, and so in every era I assumed life was a little different and also, in some aspects, similar to ours as well, here in the present.
