David Harper
I grew up exploring the woods and fields, more comfortable in nature’s honest presence than in the confusing pretentions of society.

After frustrating attempts to practice ecological land planning, I belatedly discovered the joys of expressing my feelings for nature’s strengths and vulnerabilities in sculptural installations built into outdoor sites, and in poetry and essays.

In nearly fifty years, living in Central New York, changing visitors to local bird feeders and landscapes have emerged as our winters become milder. This haiku comments on our devastating challenges to nature’s resilience, with a whimsical image of short-term adaptations.

Canada geese stay,
Robins and goldfinches rest—
Climate migrates north
